Welcome...

This is the homepage of GLN Consulting, an independent, online consulting service for teachers of psychology.  GLN Consulting offers a kind of service that teachers of psychology are unlikely to find anywhere else.  It specializes in helping them use explanatory modeling activities to develop and refine their students' scientific reasoning skills.  These skills are necessary to thinking critically about the subject matter of psychology, they are essential to evaluating, conducting, and writing psychological research, and they are a major aspect of studying psychology that students often fail to appreciate and teachers sometimes overlook.  Psychology majors need to develop these cognitive skills if they are to be successful in their chosen discipline, and students who do not major in psychology need these skills to become critical consumers of psychological research.  Moreover, students' demonstrated proficiency in using these kinds of skills constitutes a central feature of recent APA standards for assessing the quality of psychology programs at both the undergraduate and high school levels.

How Is GLN Consulting Unique?
.
GLN Consulting offers a unique approach to helping teachers facilitate the development of these skills in their students.  It specializes in helping teachers of psychology develop and refine these thinking skills by engaging students in explanatory modeling activites and integrating engagement in these activities with teaching methods and instructional resources.  The primary focus is not on improving teaching methods but on helping teachers develop their students' thinking skills by integrating those methods with engagement in these activities.  Our services focus on helping teachers to (1) develop effective explanatory modeling tasks, (2) instruct students in how to perform these tasks, (3) integrate student engagement in these activities with teaching methods and instructional resources, and (4) engage students in metacognitive reflection on and discussion of their modeling activities.

The practice of engaging students in explanatory modeling activities has been used successfully by science educators to help students refine and systematize their knowledge of the natural world.  GLN Consulting specializes in helping teachers use these kinds of modeling activities to help psychology students refine and systematize their knowledge of psychology so it can be readily assimilated to tasks that require them to anslyze and evaluate psychological explanations and to reason effectively about the occurrence and manifestations of psychological phenomena (see theoretical framework).  The founder of GLN Consulting has successfully used these kinds of modeling activities in his own teaching of a research methods course and to integrate these kinds of thinking skills into other psychology courses (see web page "About GLN Consulting).
